Who Was The Most Annoying Character On Lost?

Fun fact: Lost, which premiered on ABC ten years ago today, was originally titled Island of Assholes, but naturally the network’s Standards and Practices nixed that idea. But it certainly would have been an appropriate name for the show, since nearly everyone on it was absolutely intolerable. (The only redeemable character? That dog. And maybe the polar bear.) How did so many awful people end up getting stuck on an island together? I guess it’s just dumb luck.

While the show boasted a large ensemble cast, I’ve taken on the very difficult task of selecting just the ten most annoying characters on Lost. Disagree? Sound off in the comments!

1

Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox)

Oh, Jack. Is there any TV show protagonist who is as irritating as Dr. Shephard? It’s not the crying, per se, (never forget the Jackface) but rather the emotional instability as a whole that really pushed me (and many others like me) over the edge. Sanctimonious and hypocritical, Jack Shephard wasn’t your run-of-the-mill unlikable character: he truly was an insufferable person with lame tattoos to boot.

2

Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick)

Scots are already on my list this week after the disappointing vote to stay part of the United Kingdom (wouldn’t that have been some fun political intrigue?!), so Desmond is probably higher up on this list than he’d usually be. But. come on, calling everyone “brotha”? He officially ruined Mama Cass for me.

3

John Locke (Terry O'Quinn)

Sure, when you have an experience like suddenly not being paralyzed after a plane crash, one might be prone to pseudo-intellectual monologues and meddling, but John Locke’s brand of philosophy was really annoying. (Remember when he poisoned Boone with hallucinogens to teach him sort of lesson? That’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. He’s the worst!)

4

Kate Austen (Evangeline Lily)

Father-killing, bank-robbing, baby-stealing, back-stabbing Kate certainly made plenty of enemies on and off the Island (as well as among Lost‘s audience), but the most annoying thing about her certainly was all of the effort she went through to possess that stupid little toy airplane.

5

James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway)

Hey, guy, cool hair. Are you a sensitive con man? Easily heartbroken and fighting over various women with the other guy on the island who will start sobbing at the drop of a hat?

6

Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies)

Davies played Daniel Faraday with his typical combination of squinting, stuttering, and light autism, which all resulted in a pretty irritating time travel enthusiast that even his mother couldn’t love.

7

Benjamin Linus (Michael Emerson)

When your befuddling sci-fi soap opera is chock-full of irritants, you’ve got to try very hard to be an annoying villain. Enter Ben Linus: a squirrely little guy who weasels his way into every social circle only to double-cross everyone. And yet everyone seems to be cool with being his frenemy?

8

Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder)

Boone “Cheekbones” Carlyle was a whiny rich kid whose only real goal in life was to fuck his sister.

9

Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan)

Leave it to the heroin-addicted lead singer of the middling rock band Drive Shaft (and composer of such stunning lyrics as “You all everybody / You all everybody / You all everybody”) to make a human sacrifice seem self-serving and narcissistic.

10

Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan)

Man, remember this barrel of laughs? Forget smoke monsters, polar bears, and wild boars — the one thing I don’t want to run into in the jungle is a rifle-wielding French lady with a bad attitude.
