Really Internet: Is Dom Toretto from ‘The Fast and the Furious’ a Terminator?

Where to Stream

The Fast and the Furious

Start purchasing your tickets and pick up a pack of Coronas. The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, is coming to theaters next week, and it looks epic.

The Fast and the Furious movies are about as flawless as an action franchise can get. Mainstream and international audiences love these films because it’s next to impossible not to love buff people pulling car stunts while being flanked by explosions, and critics love them too if only to laugh at their absurd plots. No matter how you feel about the Fast and the Furious franchise, two things are certain. One, these movies will always make a shocking amount of money. Two, they will never make sense. Or will they … ? One YouTuber attempted to combine two huge action franchises together in order to make sense of these movies, and it surprisingly makes a lot of sense.

WHAT’S THE THEORY?

You know how Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) is basically an immortal, unstoppable superhero in these movies? One fan of the franchise doesn’t think the actor’s control over life itself has anything to do with nonsensical action movie tropes or Diesel’s contract restrictions. Nope, he actually comes from the world of Skynet. Dom Toretto is a Terminator.

WHY IT’S NOT THAT CRAZY

Bless Jim and Them for this theory and for his (their?) dedication to making sense of Fast and Furious‘ insane world. As How Did This Get Made? has covered at least twice, almost nothing makes sense in this universe packed with motorized stunts, especially not how strong, smart, lucky, and impenetrable its main characters are. Well, there may be an even crazier explanation for that. The YouTuber uses one of the most iconic action franchises of all time and an abandoned plan from Hollywood to explain some of Fast and Furious’ plot-based faults.

The basis of Jim and Them’s theory comes from reports that Universal wanted to pair Fast Five director Justin Lin and screenwriter Chris Morgan. Ultimately, the plan was to connect a fifth Terminator movie to the Fast and Furious franchise, but that plan fell through for various Hollywood reasons. Jim and Them argues that the movies planted the seeds for this crossover, which is why Vin Diesel never loses. It’s not that his contract says he can’t lose a fight and the star has a producer credit. He’s actually just a cyborg.

The theory points to five similarities between Dom and a Terminator:

  • Super strength
  • An inability to feel pain
  • Similar fighting styles
  • An inability to comprehend the fragility of human life
  • The fact that neither character dies even though they should several times

It’s a pretty compelling argument that I highly recommend everyone watch. The theory culminates in a quick summarization that Dom Toretto was once a normal person, but the original Dom was swapped out when he was sent to prison for two years. He was then replaced by a Terminator, though his sister likely has no idea. According to Jim and Them, there’s a dense world of Fast and Furious backstory that we’re missing, and honestly, that’s unacceptable.

WHY IT’S QUESTIONABLE

The YouTube theory actually points to two of its own biggest counter arguments: Dom’s ability to consume food and have sex. However, it quickly explains that Terminators are also able to do both of those things as proven by the extended Terminator universe.

The most likely explanation for why Dom Toretto is an immortal god is likely that two beloved, mainstream action franchises happen to have a lot in common. Movies like this are predictable, fun, and often involve lots of superhuman feats. Pair that with the rumors that Vin Diesel doesn’t want to his character to be beaten up onscreen, and of course you’re going to have an action hero who’s basically immortal. However, I like Jim and Them’s theory much better. Dom Torretto is a Terminator. Period.

The Fate of the Furious premieres in theaters April 14.
