Netflix Used Their Own ‘13 Reasons Why’ Meme To Troll Hulu — But Did It Backfire?

13 Reasons Why

Netflix was not playing around on Monday night and decided to join in on the internet’s latest meme by trolling their competition.

Their latest YA drama series, 13 Reasons Why, features a teen who has committed suicide and leaves behind individual cassette tapes for the people in her life explaining what drove her to the decision. Each tape starts with a “Welcome to your tape” and the phrase has now been adapted as the latest meme circling the internet. It’s not supposed to be taken as heavily as “I committed suicide because of you” but used for more innocuous actions such as, “Oh, you spilled coffee on me? Welcome to your tape.” While there are of course people on the internet who aren’t thrilled that the meme could be construed as making light of suicide, it’s mostly being used for more petty interactions. Such as this one at hand, where we find the streaming giant revving up its rivalry with Hulu on Twitter.

So what happened? When Hulu tweeted a video featuring the titles their platform has that Netflix does not, Netflix quote tweeted it with “Welcome to your tape.” But there are a couple things about this that make it a little bit confusing. First, is Netflix admitting that Hulu is kind of “killing” them, so to speak? Second, why step into the controversy around using this phrase so flippantly? Third, why quote tweet it to your followers so that they see what you DON’T have to offer? Why even acknowledge the competition with a burn that’s not quite as slick as you might think it is?

The internet had no problem letting Netflix know it was a bad, and potentially insensitive, move.

And then there are those that are peeved with Netflix for other reasons.

Sorry Netflix, but this round of the streaming rivalry goes to Hulu for now…until they respond with a meme from The Handmaid’s Tale.
