Netflix’s ‘The Keepers’: Big News Drops About The Docuseries’ Murder Case Before The Show Even Premieres

Where to Stream

The Keepers

The Keepers hasn’t even been released, but there have already been new developments in Netflix’s latest docu-series. Directed by Ryan White, The Keepers seeks to solve who murdered Sister Catherine Anne Cesnik over the course of its seven episodes. Along the way, the series uncovers a deeply disturbing string of wrongdoing connected to the Catholic church. If you don’t want to be spoiled by some of the twists in Netflix’s docu-series, don’t read any further.

Is everyone who already knows about the crime on board? OK, good.

Sister Catherine Anne Cesnik was 26 at the time of her death and was a teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore. She disappeared in November of 1969, but it wasn’t until months later that her body was discovered in Lansdowne. She had suffered sexual abuse and blunt trauma force to her head.

One of the main suspects connected to the murder of Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik was A. Joseph Maskell, a priest who worked with Cesnik. Maskell was long believed by many to have contributed to Cesnik’s murder, partially because of the many sexual assault allegations that have been made against him. Maskell passed away in 2001, but, as part of an ongoing investigation into this unsolved murder, detectives in Baltimore, Md., exhumed the grave of the Catholic priest in late February.

As reported by WBAL and CNN, a sample from Maskell’s exhumed remains does not match the DNA found at the murder scene 47 years ago. The Baltimore County police said on Wednesday that the results from an accredited lab have caused them to rule out Maskell as a contributor to the DNA that was preserved at the scene of the crime. This has been an especially difficult case for the police department, which has developed profiles on six suspects over the years, none of whom fit the DNA evidence. By ruling out Maskell, the police say they are back to square one.

The Keepers, the seven-part docu-series about Sister Catherine Anne Cesnik’s murder, premieres on Netflix May 19.
