‘Westworld’ and ‘Saturday Night Live’ Lead the 2017 Emmy Nominations With 22 Nods Apiece

Where to Stream

The Crown

HBO didn’t have much of a problem with no Game of Thrones to nominate this year, as freshman series Westworld racked up a whopping 22 nominations, tied for most nominations with NBC’s election-year resurgent Saturday Night LiveNetflix‘s The Crown leads the Best Drama nominees while FX’s Atlanta is the new kid on the block in Best Comedy.

The election of Donald Trump, and the insane campaign that preceded it, put a giant spotlight on Saturday Night Live, and Emmy voters responded in a big way. Its 22 nominations are the most the show has ever gotten in a single year by far (previous to this, the most was 16 in 2016 and 2011). SNL also sets the record for most nominations in the Variety Program category.

Meanwhile, Westworld nabbed nominations for Outstanding Drama Series as well as cast members Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton. The bulk of its 22 nominations come in the technical categories, where Game of Thrones also traditionally cleaned up.

It was a tidal wave of new shows in the Drama Series categories. After Westworld, the next-most nominated dramas were all also first-year shows: Stranger Things with 18 nominations, followed by The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale with 13 apiece, and NBC’s This Is Us with 11. Joining those five shows in the Outstanding Drama category are Better Call Saul and House of Cards.

Things stayed a bit more consistent in the Comedy Series categories, with returning series Veep (17 nominations), Silicon Valley (10), and Master of None all at the top of the ballot. FX’s acclaimed new series Atlanta was the most-nominated new comedy with 6 nods, including Outstanding Comedy and Outstanding Lead Actor for Donald Glover. Other Outstanding Comedy Series nominees: Black-ishUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and for the 8th consecutive year, ABC’s Modern Family. Missing from this list? Amazon’s Transparent, which missed getting nominated for the first time in three seasons.

In the talk-show and reality catgeories, the big news was that RuPaul’s Drag Race got its first ever Reality Competition Series, which was expected (though not guaranteed) after RuPaul won the Reality Competition Host trophy last year. Meanwhile, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee had last year’s snub avenged with an Outstanding Variety Talk Series nod this year, edging out both The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The 69th Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will air on CBS on September 17th.
