‘Last Man Standing’ Cancellation Had “Absolutely Nothing” To Do With The Show’s Conservative Politics, Says ABC

Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing viewers are determined to be the last fans standing, because even months later, they are still refusing to let their favorite sitcom’s cancellation go unanswered. The Tim Allen-led comedy that ran for six seasons until its surprise axing earlier this year prompted petitions and a boycott of ABC, forcing ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey to defend the decision back in May. The sitcom gained a loyal following amongst right-leaning viewers for its unabashed love of gun rights, American values, and poking fun at the left, so its cancellation appeared to many – including Allen – as another hit on the right by the “liberal media”. While Dungey’s earlier statements completely denied a link between Last Man Standing‘s ending and the show’s conservative leanings, somehow, even some three odd months later, ABC is still doing damage control.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday, Dungey elaborated upon her earlier statements. “Politics had absolutely nothing to do with it. We have actors on our shows who have all sorts of political views,” she said. Allen, a vocal conservative who attended President Trump’s inauguration, had accused ABC of cancelling the show for his views, but Dungey denied this. “Tim Allen is a valuable part of the Disney family and has been for a very long time.”

Allen, who caught flack earlier this year after comparing being a Republican to living in “’30s Germany” on Jimmy Kimmel Live, was seemingly completely blindsided by the series’ cancellation. Many fans theorized that his comments during this appearance – and support of Trump – led to the show’s demise.

Despite a petition that garnered some 400,000 signatures, ABC has no plans to revive the right-swinging sitcom – and neither does CMT, which seemed to be fans’ last hope.
