Leah Remini Confesses That Scientologist Elisabeth Moss “Isn’t Allowed to Talk to Me”

Where to Stream

Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath

Actress, producer, and vocal anti-Scientology spokesperson Leah Remini said that because fellow Emmy nominee Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) is a member of the Church of Scientology, the two would not be allowed to speak to one another during September’s Emmy Awards ceremony.

“Elisabeth Moss believes that she can’t talk to me,” Remini said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “She believes that I’m an antisocial personality — because I’ve spoken out against Scientology. So she isn’t allowed to talk to me.”

Remini was also a member of the Church of Scientology until 2013, when she officially broke her ties and began a public crusade against the controversial practices of the organization. In 2015, the Kevin Can Wait actress wrote the bestselling confessional Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. Additionally, the second season of her Emmy-nominated A&E series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath will premiere on August 14th.

Since 2013, Remini has made plenty of inflammatory comments about the religion that have further removed her from to the members of her former community. Because of this, Remini was asked what might happen if she were to run into Moss during September’s awards ceremony.

Remini told the Reporter that she would congratulate Moss on her win if they ran into one another, but she didn’t want to put the fellow actress in an awkward position.

“I don’t hold anything against Elisabeth Moss other than she’s continuing to support a group that is abusive and destroying families,” Remini said. “That’s for her to learn — just as I needed to learn it.”

If the two do cross paths at the 69th Emmy Awards on September 17th, let’s just hope the moment is televised. It would make the hours-long ceremony just a bit more interesting.
